Since ancient times, dogs have been considered ideal companions and great pets. Dogs come in a variety of sizes and types, and small dog breeds are the most endearing of the lot. Surprisingly enough, the smallest size dogs weigh only 2.2 pounds. Pomeranians, Jack Russell Terriers, Malteses, Boston Terriers, Dachshunds, Bichon Frises, Pekineses, and Skye terriers are popular small dog breeds. Exclusive toy dogs include the Shih Tzu and the Chihuahua.

Though small in size, most small dog breeds are outstanding in their courage and intelligence and are lively, loving, and shrewd. When opting to have a small dog as pet, it is ideal to select a breed that is appropriate to the environment and living space.

The Bichon Frise is a small dog breed whose birth place is the Mediterranean region. Mostly white in color and energetic by nature, it is an excellent companion for kids and the elderly. This dog is quick to win the hearts of all by its innate affection and friendliness and soon becomes a part of any family. These small dog breeds enjoy walking and can adapt to all environments and people. In the olden days, these gentle and playful small dog breeds figured as artists in circus.

The beagle is another small dog which is said to have originated in ancient Greece and France. One of the small hunting dogs, it has a good sense of smell and can be easily trained. The body characteristics include drooping ears, soft and dark brown eyes, white feet, and a white tail tip. Beagles come in black, combination of white, tan and pale tan colors, and these small dog breeds appreciate the company of another Beagle or that of family members.

The miniature dachshund is said to have been around since the 15th century and its origin is considered to be in medieval Europe. The physical characteristics of this breed are very short legs, long body, good muscular frame, and elasticity of skin. Weighing up to 11 pounds, the miniature dachshund is constantly alert, intelligent, bold, and has a jovial hunting spirit. This breed also has many features and characteristics which make it an excellent fetch dog.

Available in colors like black, white, red, brown and apricot, the miniature poodle hails from Germany and France. It enjoys the company of family members and is very calm, especially when indoors. With a weight below 20 pounds and 10-15 inches in height, these small dog breeds have thick and tight curls.

Terriers are good watchdogs and include the varieties Parson Russell terrier, Dandie Dinmont terrier, Yorkshire terrier, Boston terrier, Irish terrier, and smooth fox terrier. They are good hunters, as well as adorable pets, and have to be kept under strict control.

Trained small dog breeds are real assets in the house. It is ideal to buy the small dog breeds from reputable breeders alone. Proper care, a healthy and balanced diet, and clean water are essential for all small dog breeds. All small dog breeds need a great deal of attention and love on the part of their owners, since this instills a feeling of well being and security in them.
