Introduction

Originally called Badger Dogs, the short-legged and elongated Alpine Dachsbracke Dogs are often mistaken as Dachshunds, the only difference between them is that Alpine Dachsbrackes are longer. Still, these two breeds are related, since the Alpine Dachsbrackes are a crossing mixture of Dachshund and Austrian Black and Tan Hound. Despite their elongated frame, these dogs robust, strong-boned and short-haired dogs that are excellent hunting partners!

History

The Alpine Dachsbracke has a long and rich history as a great hunting dog because it descended from an ancient hunting breed used for rabbit, deer and fox hunting. They were bred to have impressive noses, capable of trailing scents even if they have gone cold in the harsh terrain and high altitudes of the Alps. Today, their hunting abilities are used as a game of sport performed at special gatherings.

The first apparition of this breed was in Europe (Austria) and can be dated back to the 19^th century.

Personality

Because of its nature to chase and hunt, Alpine Dachsbracke is likely to chase cats and other small pets. Don’t let this breed’s hunting instinct fool you because, when you look into its round and warm eyes, you will most certainly find a friendly and loyal companion and because of that, they are perfect for families with children. They are very sociable, and they will enjoy the presence of other dogs

Bred For

Originally bred to track wounded deer, foxes and hares in harsh terrain and high altitude.

Environment

Alpine Dachsbracke dogs can easily adapt to apartments and indoor spaces, therefore if you are considering adopting one, a yard is not a must as long as they have enough physical outdoor activities throughout the day.

Grooming

The Alpine Dachsbracke has a short-haired coat, making them a breed that is easy to look after and needs minimal grooming to reduce shedding and remove dead hair. When we talk about bathing, it is very important to do it once or twice a month or when needed so the skin under the coat can keep its natural hydration.

Training

When it comes to training this breed, patience is a must because of its scent-hound nature and hunting instincts. For instance, it is strongly recommended to encourage their physical activities to maintain their mental health. If not, they can easily get bored and start digging, chewing and barking.

Health

The Alpine Dachsbracke often struggles with a common injury among elongated breeds called  Inter-vertebral Disk Disease-causing pain and can even lead to paralysis. This disease has a higher chance to develop if the dog is obese. In addition, the breed is prone to ear infections so you should keep an eye on signs of ear ailments.

Exercise

If you are an active person, looking for a dog with a similar trait, then Alpine Dachsbracke is a perfect dog for you since it needs plenty of exercises. In other words, long daily walks, jogging or any other outdoor activity will keep them happy and healthy. Above all, they would be in their natural state if taken on hunting trips.
