Introduction

The American Alsatian is a breed created by crossing several purebreds such as the Great Pyrenees, Anatolian Shepherd, English Mastiff, etc. Nowadays, this breed is known as the largest companion breed that looks like a Dire Wolf. However, they are very calm and good-natured. Moreover, they love spending time with their family, to whom they show loyalty, affection, and love.

History

As of February 21, 2010, the official name of this breed has been changed from Alsatian Shepalute to American Alsatian.

This breed is one of the youngest dog breeds today. The breed was created in the late 1980s, but it was not until the year 2000 that this breed was introduced to the American public.

Personality

Firstly, these gentle giants prefer a calm life and tend to have low energy levels. Hence, they make perfect companion pets. On the other hand, the American Alsatian may be a bit noisy sometimes as they tend to bark and whine.

Secondly, the Alsatians are good-natured dogs and will make a good family pet for families with children and other pets. They can become very attached to their owner and don’t like being left alone. In other words, don’t leave your American Alsatian alone longer than 4 hours. Because of that, they are recommended for families where one member is home most of the time.

Thirdly, they are very protective. For example, if they notice a stranger near their territory, they will protect it but won’t show any signs of aggression.

Bred For

The American Alsatians are originally bred for becoming good human companions and therapy dogs.

Environment

Regardless of their calm temperament and low energy, they are listed as large-sized dogs. That is to say, they need a spacious home.

However, one great trait of the American Alsatian is its adaptability to various living environments. As a result, American Alsatians can live in both hot or cold climates. Most importantly, in cases of extremely warm weather, be sure to have them cooled and hydrated.

Grooming

These dogs have medium-length silver, black or cream coats that repel dirt and detritus. As a result, bathing is once or twice a month.

Even though this dog breed shed fur in the average amount, it has a double coat that requires regular grooming (once or twice a week). Also, a very important thing to do is to brush them out every once or twice a year to remove the loose undercoat hair.

Training

Regardless, their ability to get lazy, the American Alsatians are very intelligent dogs. Consequently, training them won’t be a big problem.

Walking them out or jogging would be a great way to encourage them to get out once in a while.

Health

No major health issues are known for the American Alsatian breed. However, there are several cases where hip and elbow dysplasia, seizures and enlarged heart were noticed.

Exercise

Alsatians are extremely lazy as a breed and prefer to stay at home, be lazy and go without any exercise. As a result, they are prone to obesity.
