Their stance and physical traits make them look like smaller versions of the Samoyed dogs. The Standard American Eskimo is the biggest of the three variants of the breed, any Eskie that is over 15 inches are considered standard and can reach up to 19 inches tall. All of the three Eskie varieties are eye-catchers, they have beautiful wedge-shaped heads which perfectly proportionate to their skull and muzzle. But more than their gorgeous features, the American Eskimo Dog breed is famous for his trot, bold and energetic with every step!

History

Included in the spitz family of the Nordic dog breeds, the American Eskimo dog is closely related to the white German Spitz, the Samoyed, the white Keeshond, the white Italian Spitz and also the white Pomeranian. They were brought to the USA by German settlers and developed during the post World War I years, creating a much more “PR” friendly German Spitz breed to avoid the anti-German emotions after the Great War.

The American Eskimo’s name has nothing to do with the Eskimo tribe of Alaska nor their culture, their name was intended to be “White Spitz” but the present breed’s name stuck after pioneer breeds first registered the dog with the UKC, with the breeders registering their kennel name, “American Eskimo”, instead of the intended breed’s name.

This breed is naturally a great working dog! The Standard American Eskimo dogs are multipurpose farmhands, staying true to their original purpose. They are also highly intelligent working dogs and considered to be one of the top thinking dog breeds that gifted with impressive herding instincts. Today, some of the standard sized Eskimo dogs are still used as farmworkers and serves as herding dogs. But they are now more popular as watchdogs, guard dogs, police dogs (perfect for narcotics detection), agility contests contenders as well as used in the entertainment industry.

Personality

Of the three variants of this breed, the Standard American Eskimo dogs are the most ideal to have as competitions dogs. They are just a hardy and energetic breed, possessing agile reflexes and dignified confidence during competition. The standard size variant of the Eskie is also the ideal farm working for their eagerness to work and help their human family. But they aren’t all that serious. This charming and alert northern breed is playful and loving home pets. Excellent with children, young and old, but naturally alert when strangers are nearby.

The Standard American Eskimo variety can have behavior problems. Once they feel that their human owners are not confident enough to be pack leaders, these dogs tend to be aggressive, voicing out their dominance through obsessive barking. But when properly trained, Eskies are loyal and intense guardians. Keeping strangers at bay or out of the family territory until their owners give their approval. Now that’s what you call superb watchdog!

Developed to be an all-around farm dog. Today the Standard American Eskimo dog is considered one of the best choices for guard dogs.

Environment

Can live and be happy in an apartment type environment but be sure to give them sufficient exercise. Require a good amount of exercise sessions to prevent obesity. Also, keep an eye on them during warm days: Some owners shave their American Eskimo Dogs during the summer, but this could also make them prone to sunburn.

Standard American Eskimo dogs are heavy shedders. Grooming is a must to maintain their impressive Nordic coating

Training

Because of the dog’s high intelligence and its willingness to please, it is easy to train and often ranks among the top scorers in obedience trials.

Health Problems
The Standard American Eskimo are more prone to hip dysplasia and progressive retinal atrophy among all the other Eskies. Pay close attention to the eyes and tear ducts. Some are allergic to fleas. This breed can gain weight easily if it does not get enough exercise. Obesity also happens if their diet is unsupervised. Be sure not to overfeed this dog!

Exercise

The American Eskimo needs to be taken on a long daily walk. It will enjoy a safely enclosed yard where it can run free, however, it will still need to be taken out for a pack walk to satisfy its migration instinct. Without enough mental and physical exercise, they can become hyperactive and high strung, spinning in circles.
