History

Historically, the American Foxhound breed has a special place for America, with no less than George Washington as one of its pioneer owners. So let’s see how is that possible!

The American Foxhound originated from British hounds taken to the United States during the early 1650s. However, one century later, it was bred with historically famous French Hounds and Grand Bleu de Gascogne, dogs that the American founding father, George Washington received as a gift from the Marquis de Lafayette. Firstly, American Foxhounds were bred as fox hunters, with speed and stamina being the primary focus.

Personality

The American Foxhounds are natural born hunters, and team players who love to be a part of the pack and canine. In addition, these howling musical canines are easygoing and gentle, perfect for young children and other animals. On the other hand, they are very independent and sometimes very stubborn. Therefore, early age training and socialization will help them become happy and mentally healthy dogs.

Environment

Traditionally, American foxhound dogs are not house pets. In other words, they crave to be a part of an outdoor pack of hounds and not indoor companions. However, they can adapt to any indoor space.

Grooming

American Foxhound is an average shedder coated with a smooth and short-haired coat easy to groom. Therefore, brushing with a firm bristled brush once a week and bathing once a month are recommended.

Health

The American Foxhound is a very healthy dog breed and unlike other large breeds that are prone to hip and bone ailments, the American Foxhound is resilient from the diseases affecting larger breeds. But, one health issue that does trouble these singing hounds is a tendency to be obese. Above all, the supervision of every meal is very important.

Exercise

Like other hunting breeds, the American Foxhound requires daily exercise. Therefore, daily long walks or jogging should be done regularly. That is to say, if you cannot guarantee a time for a vigorous exercise regimen, this breed is not for you.
