Introduction

Very much like its very close cousins, the American Pit Bull Terrier, The American Staffordshire Terrier is medium-size, compact, stocky and very muscular. They have this proud stance and an air of seriousness, which is just the exact opposite as this terrier dog breed is gentle and very friendly.

History

The American Staffordshire Terrier has been bred independently of the APBT for almost six decades now. The Am Staff, one of its popular nicknames got their name from the English region, Staffordshire where they bred bulldogs and an assortment of terriers to create a more muscular, active, competitive, combative and stronger dog for bull-baiting and dog-fighting. The descendants of these crosses were brought to the mainland USA where they thrived as all-around farm dogs.

Personality

Like the American Pitbull Terrier, the Am Staff share a violent history of dogfighting and bull bating. Their stoic and courageous trait makes them perfect for this bloody sport. But these dogs are more than a prized fighter and are famous for being gentle and friendly towards people, especially children. It is important to know that Am Staff can be quite aggressive toward dogs, especially other males as they consider them a threat. They will get along with dogs, but only of the opposite sex.

Bred For

Originally for dogfighting and bull-baiting, today they are all-around farm dogs, guard dogs and great home pets.

Environment

The American Staffordshire Terrier can adapt to both rural and urban living conditions. They can be apartment pets but make sure that their exercising needs are sufficiently met. The Am Staff thrives in warm climates.
