Introduction

American Staghounds are one of the most uncommon and hardest to find dogs in the world today! These dogs have long legs, a deep chest, and strong muscles. In addition, the American Staghound is a breed that has great visual acuity and scenting ability. Because of its long legs, the American Staghound breed has speeds that are close to Greyhound speeds but unlike a Greyhound, some specimens have incredible endurance.

History

The American Staghound has been bred for centuries. These dogs are the product of crosses between Greyhounds and the Scottish Greyhound.

Personality

The American Staghound can be considered as a dog with a dual personality. They are totally different when at home and when outdoors. For instance, when at home they can show inactiveness to the point of being lethargic. On the other hand, they will display their natural instinct to be mobile when they get outside.

Although these dogs were originally bred to be hunting dogs, these dogs display admirable traits and are great as family pets. In other words, they are very gentle, affectionate and patient around their family. These dogs are not dog-aggressive and they get along with other pets very well. In conclusion, they are a good-natured dog breed.

Bred For

These dogs were bred for hunting using their sight. They are impressive chasers of wolves and coyotes.

Environment

Firstly, because of their size, the American Staghound dogs are not ideal for apartments or small houses. However, they do well and can adapt to urban areas only if sufficiently exercised.

Secondly, this breed doesn’t do well in cold climate conditions and prefers to be in a warm room during winters.

Grooming

Large hair covered dogs like the American Staghound are a bit high maintenance when it comes to grooming. Although their grooming needs range from minimal to average, grooming should be done once or twice a week.

Training

Regardless of their high intelligence, the American Staghound can be a well-trained dog only if trained using a gentle and consistent approach. Being patient during training will result in an obedient dog.

Health

The American Staghound breed is usually not affected by any hereditary or genetic medical conditions. Their rarity and long breeding history have resulted in a very healthy medical history. It is important to know that these staghounds are very sensitive to anesthetics. Obesity is very common.

Exercise

This breed is very active and it lives to run. In other words, the American Staghound is a perfect dog for runners or people who love to exercise and be active. They enjoy long walks and brisk jogging.
