Introduction

The American Toy Terrier is exactly the same as the bigger and larger Fox Terrier. This toy dog breed was specifically bred down from the Fox Terriers, to create a smaller and compact dog but still retain all the traits, gameness and well-tempered attributes of their larger Fox terrier cousins.

History

During the early parts of the 1930s, breeders in the United States started crossing a variety of toy dog breeds including the Manchester Terrier and the Chihuahua. Crossbreeding was also made using the Miniature Pinscher and the Italian Greyhound. These dogs were then bred to various lines of the Smooth Fox Terrier. The result? The American Toy Terrier, a dog that has all the traits of the dogs mentioned but on a miniature scale.

Personality

The American Toy Terrier dog is a pet that will bring a lot of smiles and laughter in your home. They are passionate dogs that tends to be young spirited even when they reach maturity. These puppy-like traits make them perfect companions. These dogs are known to be animated, bright, intelligent, insightful and affectionate. The American Toy Terrier dog breed is also known to be very active and very inquisitive. Their quickness, alertness and curiosity will show whether out on the hunt of just playing at home.

Bred For

These small dogs were bred to be excellent watchdogs. They are also bred for agility competitions and as performers.

Environment

These toy terriers are one of the best pets to have in an apartment. These are dogs that are suitable for places that have warm climates. They do not do well in cold weather conditions.

Grooming

The American Toy Terrier has short hair covering their body. This type of coat requires very little grooming attention. Having them thoroughly brushed once a week will do. They are dogs that constantly shed.

Training

The American Toy Terrier is one of the most intelligent dogs in the terrier group. Training these small dogs will be easy. These small terriers will respond to calm and firm training.

Health

American Toy Terrier dogs are considered to be healthy dogs. There are lines of this breed that may be affected to medical conditions such as legg-calve-perthes. The Amertoy dogs may also suffer from allergic reactions. It is rare but does occur. Allergic reactions may come from corn, wheat and beet pulps.

Exercise

American Toy Terriers are like all other terrier dogs. Owners of these dogs should have them on a regular exercise and play-time schedule. Taking them for walks every day should be done.
