Adopt an American Treeing Feist, Dog Breed Guide

Introduction

Although recognized by many as a type of dog, American Treeing Feist is perceived to be as not a specific breed. American breeders say otherwise, they are a specific breed and should be treated like the “Lurcher”, which is often used to describe various Lurcher like dogs. In the USA there are currently three different varieties of this Terrier, the Mountain Feist, the Bench-legged Feist and the Pencil-tail Feist. To adopt an American Treeing Feist, may it be any of the three varieties is to adopt a dog that is high-spirited and very lovable.

The American Treeing Feist is also the same breed as the American Mountain Feist.

History

Often mistaken as a Rat Terrier or a Jack Russel, the American Treeing Feist can trace its roots in the Southern Appalachian. There are written accounts of these dogs, with no less than Abraham Lincoln who mentioned these dogs on one of his poems before the American Civil War, as well as noted in one of George Washington’s entries in his diary. These dogs precede the Rat Terriers centuries before it was even brought to America. On accounts, the American Treeing Feist was bred for hunting small games, more specifically for squirrel hunting where it shows impressive performance. But they are also known to take on Rabbits, Birds, and any small game.

Personality

The American Treeing Feist is a curious and intelligent dog. They are alert and very active, with impressive skills for hunting as well as well balanced to be great companion dogs. High-spirited, yet very lovable, the American Treeing Terrier is just a ball of energy that is jovial and easy-going in behavior.

Bred For

Hunting small game animals including squirrels and rabbits.

Environment

This breed loves to hunt and prefer to be outdoor pets. They are not suitable for city living and apartment conditions.

Grooming

The American Treeing Feist is easy to groom. An occasional combing and brushing to remove dead hair is all it needs.

Training

Early training should be done to establish the pack leader status.

Health

American Treeing Feist is one of the healthiest American dog breeds known today.

Exercise

The American Treeing Feist is a breed that lives to hunt. On days it cannot be taken hunting it needs to be taken on a long walk or jog.
