Introduction

Great swimmers and a state icon, American Water Spaniels are one of a few dogs that can be called an American original. A water spaniel that is hardy and well-muscled even for their size, the American Water Spaniel earned the distinction of being the Official Dog of The State of Wisconsin. The citizens of Wisconsin selected this active and cheerful spaniel breed gave it well deserved recognition in 1985. Besides that State Dog stature, the American Water Spaniel is also the first-ever spaniel breed developed in the United States to create an all-around hunting dog that can dive out and climb in small boats to retrieve small game animals.

History

The American Water Spaniel was originally developed and bred to hunt waterfowl and small game in the Wolf and Fox River Valley regions of The State of Wisconsin during the late 19th century. Their ancestry is quite foggy, but most believed that this dog breed is a descendant of three crosses, The English Water Spaniel, The Irish Water Spaniel and Curly-Coated Retriever. One of the purposes for the breed’s development was to create a sporting dog that is small enough to fit, well, small boats, yet still sturdy enough to work in cold water temperatures.

Personality

Friendly, but often seen to be very busy are the trademark personalities of the American Water Spaniel. Bred to be the perfect hunting companion that can go jump out of small boats to retrieve prey, these spaniels are thriving aquatic activities and famous for being great swimmers even for their small compact size. The AWS is fine to have around children and would show their cheerfulness, high energy and fun-loving nature to them. But they can quite possessive with their food, which may result in a dominant aggression problem called the “Rage Syndrome”.

Environment

The breed can adapt to both suburban and rural living conditions. Most will do okay in apartment living spaces as long as their exercise needs are met. Homes with an average-sized yard is recommended

Grooming

Thorough grooming is demanded by the American Water Spaniel’s oily coat; they tend to smell when not adequately taken care of. This spaniel dog breed is a light shedder.

Training

Positive training is the key to have them well socialized and behave properly as a home pet.

Health

The American Water Spaniels are known to be prone to quite a few health conditions including Alopecia, blindness, deafness, epilepsy, heart-related problems, hip dysplasia, luxating patellas, poor temperament, spinal or neck problems and thyroid conditions.

Exercise

They require lots and lots of exercise. Having long daily walks with them can do, but the AWS dog breed will enjoy aquatic activities. Having a permanent job as a hunter would be perfect.
