Introduction

The Atlas Terrier is a small to medium-sized breed with an exceptional personality. These dogs are an offshoot of the Jack Russell Terrier. As a result, they are very feisty as a breed. However, Atlas Terrier dogs are very brave and loyal which is why they are good at being watchdogs and family pets.

These little fun devils are available in three different sizes: Toy Atlas Terriers, Mini Atlas Terrier and Standard Atlas Terriers

History

These rare dogs were developed in the USA in the 1990s as a superior line of Jack Russell Terrier, with reduced chances of deafness. In other words, Jack Russel dogs were developed primarily for hunting traits and not for the looks. On the other hand, today they are bred for cosmetic reasons which resulted in Jack Russell dogs having hearing problems. In conclusion, the Atlas Terrier was created and developed to stop and resolve this problem.

Personality

Firstly, the Atlas Terrier is a sociable, devilish, happy, faithful and affectionate dog. It is energetic and docile, yet absolutely bold. Therefore, an Atlas Terrier will enjoy playing with your children as long as the playing stays “friendly” and the dog does not start to fear for its safety and/or see himself above the kids.

Secondly, they are extremely intelligent and will enjoy trying to outsmart their owners at every turn. In addition, they will test the boundaries and push the limits, so owners need to be on their toes.

Bred For

They were developed to defeat Jack Russel’s gene that causes terriers to be prone to deafness.

Environment

The Atlas Terrier dogs can easily adapt to any environment. However, they will only do good in an apartment if sufficiently exercised. In other words, as they are very active indoors, Atlas Terriers do best with at least an average-sized yard.

In addition, do not leave these dogs alone when nobody is at home. Therefore, they are perfect pets for people that are at home most of the time.

Grooming

The Atlas Terrier coat is very thick and may come in different colors such as brindle and merle. In addition, their coat comes in two coat varieties, smooth and wire. Neither are high-maintenance coats. However, regular grooming will provide healthy and shiny hair to your little pet.

Training

As for most dogs, early socialization and training should be done to avoid violent behavior when in other dogs company.

Health

Atlas has gone through an extremely controlled breeding program that was used to create this breed. In other words, all originating dogs used were previously tested and monitored well into their senior years as longevity was a concern as well. To this day no major health problems have been detected.

Exercise

Like the Jack Russell, the Atlas Terrier will exercise and amuse itself in a yard. However, without supervision, its choice of activity may not be to your liking. Moreover, they thrive on being your shotgun buddy. In short, they will follow you anywhere you go. Atlas Terrier dogs need long daily walks or run to maintain their health. Above all, they enjoy doing active sports, like agility, fly-ball, and racing.
