Introduction

The smallest working dog ever, and Australia’s first-ever original breed, the Australian Terrier are natural-born diggers and will stop at nothing to catch small games such as rodents, snakes and a various number of other animals.

History

One of the smallest working terriers every created, the Australian Terrier shares a common ancestry with the Silky Terriers. These dogs were developed by mixing rough-coated terriers with other British terriers. It is the first-ever Australian breed to be recognized and shown in Australia. It was originally bred to help control rodents and snakes, to serve as watchdogs and as perfect companions.

They were first known and shown as the Australian rough-coated Terrier in 1868 in Melbourne, Australia, The Australian Terrier was officially recognized in 1933 and identified as created by crossing many terrier breeds including, Skye Terriers, Yorkshire Terriers, Dinmont Terriers, Danie Terriers, Norwich Terriers, Cairn Terriers and the Iris Terrier.

Personality

Courageous, alert and very spirited are the three top traits which the Australian Terriers are known for. They are also booming with self-confidence, known to be friendly and affectionate with their family but will be wary and very suspicious towards strangers. Having them well socialized will be making these dogs fine around children and other dogs.

Environment

Exercise

Very adaptable when it comes to any type of living conditions, but The Australian Terrier should be taken on daily walks. A safe and average-sized yard where they can roam and play will make them happy.
