Introduction

Originally developed as farm dog that can do guardian tasks and livestock driving, the Austrian Shorthaired Pinscher earned the nickname “Farm Biter”, as this was the dog’s primary way to drive livestock towards the right destination!

History

The Austrian Shorthaired Pinscher is closely related to the German Pinscher. In their native country Austria, they are believed to have been developed as an all-purpose farm worker, as well as being a general “farm biter”. Farm biters are dogs that are used to drive livestock as well as act as a guard dog. Since the late 1700s, dogs that are very much identical to the Austrian Shorthaired Pinscher have been recorded through paintings. But their precise year of origin is unknown.

Personality

These are very alert dogs full of vigor and spirit. It is fearless and self-confident. It is wary with strangers and sometimes aggressive with other dogs.

Bred For

Farm biters to drive livestock as well as guard the farm.

Environment

The best condition to have for an Austrian Pinscher would be a farm, however, a large yard will do.

Grooming

These dogs require minimal grooming attention, occasional brushing will do.

Health

The Austrian Pinscher can suffer from HD and they do have a heart condition that is hereditary.

Exercise

The Austrian Pinscher will get enough exercise if he is living on a farm however if you don’t have a big yard the dog needs to go on a long daily walk.
