History
The Austrian Smooth-Haired Hound or simply the Austrian Hound is a scent hound originating in Austria. They are hound dogs that share very similar traits and appearance to most German hound breeds, but Austrian breeders are adamant that this breed is purely and 100% Austrian! They are dogs that are believed to be the descendants of the Celtic hound dog breed that were used for various hunting tasks and even during times of war. These scent hounds are equipped with highly developed noses and capable of being completely silent when hunting.

Personality
These are dogs famous for their quickness, agility and stealth capabilities when hunting. They move elegantly but will be impressive chasers of wounded prey. Although impressive and prized hunters that can go after all types of games that are hunted in Austria, these dogs are known to be great family pets as they display a very good temperament.

Bred For
Austrian Hounds were originally bred to be silent hunters of various games. These quick dogs are impressive when running after a wounded hare. Today, these dogs are still being bred for their hunting skills as well as for agility and competitive obedience trials. They are also becoming popular as watchdogs.

Environment
The Austrian Smooth-Haired Hound is not suited to be city dogs or apartment pets. They are dogs that will thrive in rural areas and given a regular hunting job or used as watchdogs.

Grooming
This Austrian hound breed will be very easy to groom and requires minimal attention. These are dogs that shed hair in very small amounts or none at all.

Training
The intelligent Austrian Smooth-Haired Hound dog breed will be very easy to train. If kept as pets, it is advised to have these dogs socialized and trained for obedience as early as possible.

Health
This Austrian hound breed is fairly healthy and not known to acquire genetic diseases that are common to other dogs groups.

Exercise
The Austrian Smooth-haired may be a serious hunter but this breed is known to display their playful side. They are very energetic dogs that would love outdoor activities. Unlike other highly energetic dog breeds, this breed does not require plenty or vigorous exercise sessions to satisfy their activity needs. A moderate exercise regimen will be sufficient.
