History

The Barger Stock Feist is a working dog breed that was first developed in the city of Harriman that is in Roan County of Tennessee. Pioneer breeders of this Feist-type dog are credited to the husband and wife Feist breed named Bill and Rita Barger. They bred this “squirrel-dogs” for treeing and competitive hunting. Like all other Feist variety, the Barger Stock Feist are descendants of the crosses between Native American dogs and small terrier breeds from Great Britain. The Barger Stock Feists are silent hunters known to bark only to intimidate and hold prey until the huntsman gets to it. They are specifically bred for treeing squirrels, rabbits and various rodents.

Personality

The Barger Stock Feist are even-tempered dogs that will display gentleness and their playful side towards family and children. These are lively hunters that are full of energy but will be silent and alert while out on the field. At home they friendly and well-mannered dogs.

Bred For

Barger Stock Feist are being bred to be efficient “squirrel dogs” that will be silent hunters and intimidating treeing dogs when after vermin, rodents and other small game.

Environment

The Barger Stock Feist dog was originally bred in rural America and is not recommended to keep as city or apartment pets.
