Looking like a miniature Foxhound, the Beagle dog breed got their name from the French word “be’geule”. It literally translates to the phrase “gape throat”, referring to the dog’s unique barking sound. Some also believe that their name came from the French word “beigh” which means small.

History

Beagles have existed for centuries, but the breed as we know it today was developed in Great Britain about 150 years ago. Internationally it is known to be one of the most popular dog breeds and has been a favorite home pet in North America for more than a quarter of a century.

Personality

The Beagle is a good-tempered dog, but it’s also independent-minded. These dogs are outgoing, very friendly and get along well with children and other animals. But be sure to socialize them early to avoid unwanted problems which may arise. Also, be patient with the Beagles, as they will always pursue scents.

Environment

They are one of the most adaptable dogs when it comes to living conditions. The Beagle can live in city, rural and suburban living conditions.

Grooming

Beagles have a smooth and short-haired coating which requires minimal care. However, be sure to have their ears regularly checked as theses dogs are prone to infections. The Beagle is an average shedder.

Training

Special needs for their training are required. Like most hounds, the Beagle is very intelligent and would be easy to train, but they are easily distracted as they will always pursue scents.

Health

Among the Beagle Dogs, some bloodlines are more prone to major diseases affecting the nervous system, respiratory system as well as eye and back problems. They are also more prone to have achondroplasia also known as dwarfism.

Exercise

Beagles have great stamina and are naturally energetic! They require plenty and regular exercise. A brisk daily walk or jogging sessions are highly recommended. Home with an average-sized yard would make these dogs happy, but be sure to have them fenced.
