Introduction

The Bearded Collie is considered to be one of the oldest of Britain’s native dog breeds but only became popular across the Atlantic during 1967, the year where first USA dog breeders started to breed them. This dog is famous for its “bounce”, showing their high level of energy while strutting along.

History

One of Great Britain’s oldest dog breeds, the Bearded Collie can trace its ancestry from the European and British sheep herding dogs, particularly the Lowland sheepdog. This breed is a progenitor of both the Border Collie and the Old English Sheepdog. Today, these dogs are still being used as herding dogs and companions in Great Britain and the United States.

Personality

Bearded Collies are dogs that are friendly outgoing dogs with strong herding instincts. It is very playful and devoted to their family. They get along with almost everyone, including children.

Bred For

These dogs were bred to flock and herd in Scotland, as well as performance competition dogs.

Environment

The Bearded Collie is not recommended for apartment life. Bearded Collies can be outdoor pets. These dogs are also great in windy, rugged or wet areas as they are known to be all-weather condition dogs. It does not like to be confined!

Grooming

This god breed requires a lot of grooming. Daily brushing of their coat is needed and also having their coats professionally clipped every two months is recommended.

Training

Obedience training is recommended. The Beardies are headstrong dogs and should be dealt with a sense of natural authority but done in a calm, firm, confident and consistent manner.

Health

The Bearded Collie is prone to hip dysplasia. Their dense coat may conceal external parasite infestation so it is best to keep them well-groomed.

Exercise

The Bearded Collie is an active dog and they need a lot of exercises! This includes long daily walks with them. They also will thrive in homes with an average-sized yard.
