History
The Beauceron is a very old breed that can be traced as far back as the sixteenth century. They are French of origin and these natural herders are considered to be a rare species outside their home country. The Beauceron dog breed is closely related to the Briard, with both breeds being French livestock guardians. Up until the nineteenth century no distinction was recognized, these two French breeds were considered as one and the same. Today the distinction is clear; the short-haired variety is classified as a Beauceron, while the long-haired variant remained the Briard. Originally used as guardian dogs, this breed went through a transformation after the French Revolution, when they were started to be used primarily as herding dogs. In present times, they have gained popularity in other areas of Europe as well as in the Northern American continent for their high skills in livestock herding.

Personality
These are courageous and intelligent dogs, making the Beauceron a highly trainable. They are eager to please and show devotion to their owners, proudly showing off their versatility while doing a task and proving they are excellent workers.

Bred For
Originally for flocking and livestock guarding. From the start of the French Revolution and up to the present they are used for herding.

Environment
These hardworking canines are not suitable for an apartment type living condition. They will thrive in homes with a large yard and ample space to run.

Grooming
minimal attention is required to groom these dogs. The Beauceron’s short coat only needs attention during shedding season. This is a breed that is considered to be average shedders.

Training
Socialization and obedience training should be started early. They are highly trainable because of their high intelligence and natural instinct to please.

Health
Hardy and healthy are some of the impressive characteristics of the Beauceron. Some of the breed’s lines are prone to bloat. Hip and dysplasia are also common for their huge frames. In the US, this hip problem is gradually on the decline as a huge number of breeders breed only hip certified lines.

Exercise
The Beauceron will do okay in an apartment if it is sufficiently exercised. They are moderately active indoors and will do best with at least a large yard.
