History

Believed to have been developed and bred during the middle nineteenth century, The Bedlington Terrier dog breeding origins started in Northern England, specifically in Cumberland County. During their first years, they were called as the Rothbury Terrier. These dogs got their present name after gaining popularity as battle eager hunters of vermin’s, badgers, foxes and otters in the mining village of Bedlington.

Personality

Generally, these dogs are mild and gentle, but they are also known to be very alert, courageous and full of energy. These beloved small game hunters are also known to be very friendly towards people and can sensitive enough to sense human emotions. But they are dogs that will always be a way of other dogs and can get nasty with them. Their strong urge to be dominant will show when challenged by other dogs and other breeds, and you’ll be surprised how terrifying these gentle-looking herders can get once involved in a fight.

Bred For

These fluffy but fierce dogs are natural hunters of small game including vermin’s, badgers, otters and foxes.

Environment

This breed will do okay in an apartment if it is sufficiently exercised. They are fairly active indoors and will do okay without a yard.

Grooming

Their coat sheds little to no hair and requires specialized clipping every six weeks, so it is probably best if you learn to do it yourself.

Training

Positive training and early socialization are needed to avoid behavioral problems such as Small Dog Syndrome, Separation anxiety and dog-aggressive dominance.

Health

Bedlington Terriers have several health-related problems that plagues them as a dog breed. These dogs are prone to Copper Storage Disease. It is a very serious medical condition that attacks the liver. Dogs acquire this disease through their parents. These terriers also have high risks of acquiring hereditary kidney disease. Bedlington terrier dogs are also known to have problems the affects eyesight and health issues that affect the thyroid.

Exercise

If you decide to adopt a Bedlington Terrier, it is important to remember that these are active dogs that require plenty of exercises. Like their other terrier cousins, they will be bored and mischievous without sufficient activities to work their energies off. Long daily walks are highly recommended.
