History
Named after their country of origin, Belgian Griffon dogs were developed as a purebred during the 19th century. These dogs were specifically created to be efficient rat hunters. It is believed to have been created by crossing various lines of several dog breeds including the English Toy Spaniels, Affenpinschers and the Pug. Today they are no longer rat hunters and are now famous for being companion dogs.

Personality
Belgian Griffon dogs possess high intelligence. They are dogs that are known to be very alert and jaunty. These Belgian dogs are also known to be over confident and display self-importance making them very difficult to train.

Bred For
Belgian Griffons were bred originally as ratters on farms. Today they are no longer used as such and are famous for being companion dogs.

Environment
Belgian Griffons are ideal dogs for apartment life.

Grooming
The Belgian Griffon dog breed is high maintenance when it comes to grooming. Their coat requires lots of attention. Fortunately, these are dogs that shed hair in very little amounts or none at all.

Training
Belgian Griffon can be difficult to train for their over confident and stubborn traits. Patience is the key to have them properly trained.

Health
This Belgian dog breed is plagued with various medical conditions ranging from major to minor health issues. The most common health-related problems recorded on this breed include brachycephalic syndrome, genetic defects such as the cleft palate and various reproductive problems.

Exercise
The Belgian Griffon may be a small dog and known to be indoor pets but that does not mean they require minimal exercise. In fact, these dogs demand plenty of vigorous activities to sufficiently satisfy their energy needs! Owners of these small dogs should take them on walks every day!
