Introduction

A native of the Belgian city of Malines where it got its name, Belgian Shepherd Malinois are one of four varieties of the Belgian Shepherds recognized today by USA standards. This breed is different from the other four by having a smooth and short-haired coating.

History

In the United States, Belgian Shepherds are divided into four separate dog breeds, the Malinois, Groenendael, Laekenois, and Tervuren. Their primary distinctions are on their coats, all variety possesses unique and consistent length, texture and color on their coats.

The Belgian Malinois was named after the Belgian city of Malines, the region where these dogs were initially bred for livestock protection and for their guarding traits. In the USA, the Malinois breed if Belgian Shepherds are rare. But among the four varieties, the Malinois is the most popular in Belgium.

Today, some are still used to be guardians of livestock, but it is more popular as police dogs, performing impressively in police work such as narcotics and bomb detectors and search and rescue operations.

Personality

These are dogs are intelligent and highly trainable. They are also known to be affectionate, loving to their families, but will reserve with strangers. They are naturally protective and territorial. They are also considered as dogs that are very devoted. So devoted they usually have the one-person dog characteristics.

Bred For

Livestock protection and herding but have evolved to an all-purpose protection dog for enforcement agencies and rescue operations.

Environment

The Belgian will do okay in an apartment if it is sufficiently exercised. This breed prefers cool climates but adapts well to other weather conditions.

Grooming

Belgian Shepherd Malinois have this smooth short-haired coat that is very easy to maintain. Their grooming needs require regular brushing. Bathing these dogs should only be done if it is needed. Their coat will lose the natural water-resistant trait if these dogs are frequently bathed. Belgian Shepherd Malinois are dogs that don’t shed as much as other Belgian Shepherds. They are light, but constant shedders.

Training

they need leadership, daily exercise along with training and companionship, for without it they may become destructive and hard to handle.

Health

No major health concerns are known. Some minor concerns that have been seen are skin allergies, eye problems, excessive shyness, excessive aggressiveness and occasionally hip dysplasia and elbow dysplasia.

Exercise

This is a hardy and healthy working dog that demands an active outdoor lifestyle. Long daily walks with them should be taken.
