History
The Bukovina Sheepdog is considered to be an ancient dog breed that originates in the Carpathian region of northeastern Romania, specifically the area of Bucovina. This breed was originally bred for flock guardian duties and has been widely used by Romanian sheep herders for several centuries. Locally, they popularly called Dulau or Capau which means shepherd’s dog. These dogs are also famous for being fearless and impressively brave when going against very dangerous predators like a pack of wolves and big mountain bears. The official standard of this ancient flock guardian breed was established by the Asociatia Chinologica Romana or Romanian Kennel Club in 1982 and was recently updated in 2001.

Personality
The Bukovina Sheepdog is prized in Romania and the surrounding areas for their loyalty, and very dependable protectors and defenders of livestock. These are dogs that will display their loving, affectionate, gentleness and very intelligent traits towards their family. They are dogs that will display playfulness, tolerance and kindness when around children. Their strong protective nature is known to give them extreme courage to fight to the end in dire situations. They will not trust strangers and will be vocal when intruders or strangers are nearby.

Bred For
The Bukovina Sheepdog was bred as dependable and very strong flock guardians for cattle and sheep that can go against large and dangerous predators such as wolves and bears.

Environment
The Bukovina Sheepdog is not an apartment dog. They are not suited to live in highly urbanized areas. These are natural flock guards that will thrive in rural areas and should be given a job as watchdogs and livestock guardians.

Grooming
This big Romanian sheepdog breed is a bit demanding when it comes to their grooming needs. The coat should be brushed frequently. They are dogs that should be constantly attended to when it comes to grooming.

Training
This sheepdog’s natural tendency to be independent will make them difficult to train. They are also known to become stubborn in repetitive training sessions. These are dogs that should be trained by experienced, patient and very confident dog handlers.

Health
There are no known medical conditions or hereditary diseases that affect this dog breed. Minor problems that are work-related like fractures and sprain may occur occasionally.

Exercise
The Bukovina Sheepdogs are herders and cattle protectors that tend to roam freely while on the job. They are dogs that should be stimulated mentally and physically every day. They should be put to work or sufficiently exercised by taking them on regular walks and jogging.
