History
The Buldogue Campeiro originates in Brazil and has been bred since the 16th century. This working dog breed is one of Brazil’s oldest dogs that were bred to catch wild cattle in and hold them until they reach the slaughterhouse. The name Buldogue Campeiro was chosen for the breed’s name as it means “rural bulldog”, as they are impressive working dogs in the rural areas of this Southern American country. They are also used as guard and shepherd dogs that herd, drive and protect their stock from wild predators and human intruders and thieves.

Personality
The Buldogue Campeiro earned a reputation of being a very obedient and loyal working dog in Brazil’s rural regions. They may have an intimidating physical appearance, but these dogs are even-tempered and very calm, making them good to have as family pets. These dogs are not just excellent flock guardians and herders of cattle; they are also natural at being watchdogs. They will be very suspicious and quite reserved when strangers are nearby. The Buldogue Campeiro is also known to be very protective of its human family, property and territory. Over all, this is a breed that will serve as a loyal companion for the entire family, vigilant and ready to protect and hardworking when on the job.

The Buldogue Campeiro was bred to be Brazil’s rural all-purpose dogs that can herd, drive and protect cattle. They are also great guards and watch dogs.

Environment
Buldogue Campeiro dogs are not for the city. Their name means “rural bulldogs” and would thrive in rural areas where they can perform and work for their masters.

Grooming
Buldogue Campeiros are dogs that have short coats. This coat type does not require much grooming and is very easy to maintain.

Training
This Brazilian working dog breed is known for their obedience and eagerness to please their masters, making them highly trainable.

Health
They are considered to be a hardy dog breed but medical issues do occur. Buldogue Campeiro is known to suffer from severe hip dysplasia.

Exercise
The Buldogue Campeiro was specifically bred to be hard workers and with high levels of energy to do their duties. This makes them high maintenance dogs to have when it comes to their exercise needs. If not kept as their original purpose, these dogs should be taken on long brisk walks every day. They are large dogs that will benefit if given ample time to run freely on wide-open spaces.
