History
The Cão de Fila de São Miguel or Azores Cattle Dog is a dog breed originating in Portugal’s Azorean Islands and started being breed as early as the late 1400s. This dog breed was created to be a “fila” dog or cattle dog on the island which was then populated by free-roaming wild cattle. The Cão de Fila de São Miguel is believed to have descended from the now-extinct Fila de Terceira breed that was crossed with the other Portuguese molloser-type dogs. They are first and foremost cattle herders but were also used as excellent guard dogs that protect people and property.

Personality
The Cão de Fila de São Miguel is a dog breed that is known to be a dominant herding dog that is famous for its ability to work as livestock guards and herders and lasts for an entire year without going home. These are intelligent dogs that are quick to learn lessons and will be able to execute a variety of commands. They are excellent working dogs that are also great as guards of property and protectors of the family. Cão de Fila de São Miguel dogs have sharp temperament but will display its docile nature towards their family. This is a breed that is known to be very defensive when it comes to their territory.

The Azores Cattle Dog was created to herd free-roaming wild cattle in the lush green vegetation covered Azores Islands.

Environment
