Introduction

Cardigan Welsh Corgi are cousins to the Pembroke Welsh Corgi, but older s a breed. Both Corgis come from the lines of Keeshond, Pomeranian, Schipperkes and the Swedish Vallhund and developed by the Celts as far back as 1200 B.C.

History

The Cardigan Welsh Corgi was developed in Cardiganshire, Wales as a cattle herder and drover. They also served as a family companion and ratter. Welsh Corgi dogs are cousins to the Dachshund, and it is believed to be descended from dogs brought to Wales by the Celts as long as 3,000 years ago. It is closely related to the Pembroke Welsh Corgi. It was first seen in the United States in the early 1930s and has gained popularity in recent years.

Personality

The Cardigan is often described as a big dog in a small body; it is alert, intelligent, and hardworking. This dog breed is playful and affectionate with friends and family but wary with strangers. It may herd small children and other animals.

Bred For

The Corgis were developed and used as cattle drivers, vermin hunters, and farm guards.

Environment

Corgis will do fine in an apartment if they are sufficiently exercised.

Grooming

These dogs wiry, the medium-length water-resistant coat is easy to groom. Their coat sheds two times per year.

Training

Their natural traits make them one of the dog breeds that are easiest to train.

Health

The Welsh Corgi only suffers from a few health ailments which include glaucoma and back disorders. They are more prone to have PRA and suffer from obesity.
