Introduction

Firstly, the Caucasian Ovcharka has been in the history books since ancient times. However, this dog breed’s most famous historical fact is that they were created and developed by the Soviet Army!

Secondly, the Caucasian Ovcharka is a large dog breed originating from the Caucasus Mountains. In addition, these dogs are strongly boned, muscular and handsome. However, regardless of their looks and size, they are even-tempered dogs.

History

The nomadic tribes brought ancient Tibetan dogs which they used for a variety of reasons. And these dogs were direct ancestors of the Caucasian Ovcharka breed.

Further, the Red Army chose the Caucasian Ovcharka as one of the dog breeds for their military dog breeding program. Above all, this rigorous development made them one of the most guard dogs in the Russian Federation.
In addition, USSR used various northern dog breeds to create the perfect working dog. In other words, USSR created the Caucasian Ovcharka.

Personality

The Ovcharka is an intelligent, bold and even-tempered dog.

Although protective, it is calm and loyal toward its family. However, The Caucasian Ovcharka is a low-activity dog but can be very aggressive towards other dogs. Therefore, early socialization and training are very important.

Environment

These dogs are huge and they need ample amounts of space to wander around. Therefore, the Caucasian Ovcharka is not an apartment type of dog.  In other words, perfect conditions for them are houses with big backyards. Because of their origins, The Caucasian Ovcharka dogs enjoy being in the snow and cold weather.

Grooming

Most importantly, they are average shedders and need grooming once or twice per week. However, Caucasian Ovcharka sheds once or twice per year in larger amounts. Therefore, brushing them once or twice a week will keep their coat healthy and shiny. However, when the shedding season comes, they need brushing more often.

Training

With this Caucasian Mountain Dog, obedience and housebreaking training at an early age are very important.

Health

The Caucasian Ovcharka is usually a healthy breed if taken care of properly. However, they can be affected by hip and elbow dysplasia and occasional heart disorders. In addition, since they are prone to obesity, the supervision of every meal is very important.

Exercise

The Caucasian Ovcharka is a livestock guard. Therefore, it should be taken for a daily walk regularly. In other words, outdoor activities will keep them happy and healthy.
