A toy spaniel that survived near extinction, the Cavalier King Charles Spaniel is a resilient breed with a glorious past and a promising future as one of the top companion dog breeds that is suitable for all sorts of personalities.

History

Small toy spaniels like this have been known in Europe since the sixteenth century: they were bred as companions and to hunt small game. In the seventeenth century, the toy spaniel became a special favorite of King Charles I and was popular with royalty through the reign of King Charles II. By the late seventeenth century, however, it became rare and almost disappeared. The breed wasn’t revived until the 1920’s when an American came to Britain looking for the breed he’s seen in old paintings. For five years he offered money for the best old-type spaniel at the Crafts Dog Show, stirring a revival of what was to become known as the Cavalier King Charles Spaniel. The Breed has had a following in the United States and the United Kingdom since, and it has become more popular than the original King Charles Spaniel (known as the English toy spaniel in North America)

Personality

This is a gentle, friendly, and affectionate dog that is easygoing and gets along with almost everyone.

Bred For

Developed as companion dogs and hunting dogs for small game.

Environment

Cavalier King Charles Spaniels are good for apartment life. The Cavalier does not do well in very warm conditions.

Grooming

Their coat is moderately long, silky, and straight or slightly wavy, with feathering on the ears, feet, and back of the legs and tail demands high attention and maintenance. This breed is an average shedder.

Training

Training them would be moderately difficult, but these dogs are naturally bred to live life with rules, follow and limits to what they are allowed to do.

Health

Allergies, hip dysplasia, luxating patellas, mitral valve disease, syringomyelia are the most common dog health issues affecting the Cavalier King Charles Spaniel.

Exercise

Cavalier King Charles Spaniels need a daily walk regiment as well as hours devoted to playing. They will thrive in homes with a large yard that is safely fenced.
