Introduction

The Central Asian Shepherd Dog is a very large, powerful dog that is slightly longer than it is tall. The dog is double-coated with a profuse undercoat and an outer coat which can be long or short.

History

For several thousands of years, Asian nomads in the central region of the Asian continent kept guardian dogs to keep large predators at bay. These ancient dogs used by the nomadic tribes of Central Asia are believed to be the ancestors of the modern day Central Asian Shepherd Dogs. They were created to go head to head against bears and other large animals. Today, these brave guardians are still being used as livestock guards. They have a healthy number as a dog breed within their native region, but in the USA and other parts of Northern and Southern America, the Central Asian Shepherds are considered rare.

Personality

Naturally bred to protect, the Central Asian Shepherd dogs are often aggressive towards other canines. These are intelligent guards who will protect their family! They are loyal and will show sincere affection towards each member of their family. But when it comes to strangers, they will always be wary!

These giant dogs have protected nomadic tribes as well as their flocks for several centuries.

Environment

The Central Asian Ovtcharka requires a large yard that is suitably fenced. They are not meant to be apartment dogs and not suitable for kennel living.

Grooming

These giant dogs do not require a lot of grooming. They shed their coats heavily in the spring.

Training

High levels of obedience make these extra large dogs relatively easy to train.

Health

The Central Asian Shepherd Dog has no known medical issues that commonly affect large dogs like them. They are considered to be one of the healthiest dog breeds in the world today.

Exercise

Central Asian Shepherd Dogs would be perfect pets for those individuals who are living very active lifestyles and into hiking and jogging.
