Introduction

The Chesapeake Bay Retriever is a strong, medium-sized dog, slightly longer than it is tall. The coat is short, oily, and water-repellent, wavy on the body but straight on the head and legs. They were named after the Chesapeake Bay as these dogs were developed to stand the rough and icy waters of the bay so they can hunt waterfowls.

History

The Chesapeake Bay Retriever dog breed has a very romantic history. In the year 1807, an English naval vessel was shipwrecked off the shores of Maryland. Inside the ship are two puppies, a male named “Sailor” and a female which has the name of “Canton”. The shipwrecked pups were rescued by a man named George Law. The two pups have the traits of typical Newfoundland dogs. The rescued pair of puppies are the direct ancestors of the modern Chesapeake Bay Retriever. They were bred with local retriever dog breeds to produce a specialized game fowl hunter. Specifically, these retrieving dogs were created to hunt and retrieve ducks local the Chesapeake Bay region. The Chessie, as it is fondly called in its native region, was recognized as a distinct retriever breed by the end of the nineteenth century.

Personality

Chessie dogs outdoorsy types! They just love the great outdoors and activities in the field. They are naturally very energetic and should be watched around children as these dogs will react with provocation. But they are friendly with kids in general. They are intelligent and easy to train, showing eagerness to learn and to work! These courageous retrievers will show affection when around family and familiar faces. Strangers will cause these dogs to be wary and will show their serious and reserve side.

Developed to create a dog that can be used to hunt waterfowl in the rough and icy waters of the Chesapeake Bay.

Environment

Chesapeake Bay Retrievers are not recommended for apartment life. These dogs will do best with at least an average-sized yard. They prefer cool climates.

Grooming

The Chesapeake’s dense, harsh, short-haired coat is oily with a distinct smell and is easy to groom. This breed is an average shedder.

Health

The Chesapeake Retriever is a dog breed prone to eye problems and hip dysplasia.

Exercise

The Chesapeake Bay retriever needs a good deal of vigorous activity, including swimming if possible.
