History
The Chien d’Artois is considered to be one of the rarest dogs in the world today. These are scent hounds that descend from the lines of the Blood Hound and originated in France during the 18th century.

This breed gained a reputation as the preferred hounds of French royalty. Their hunting skills earned them the attention of Henry IV of France and Louis XIII of France, various French noble houses more specifically the house of the Princes of Condé.

This particular French hound breed has a very troubled history of being nearly extinct. By the 20th century, it was known as the Picardy, in honor of the city where revival programs to save this rare dog breed started. But the breakout of World War I and II made this revival a failure. By 1975, a revival of the Chien d’Artois started again, with a breeding program that selected the best and purest specimens among the very few remaining Chien d’Artois dogs.

Bravery, loyalty and a natural tactician when it comes to hunting games in different terrain and conditions. That is what the Chien d’Artois dog breed is prized for! These dogs are known for their high endurance and well-balanced disposition. It is a breed that displays the best traits of a scent hound: fast, strong and solid scenting abilities and independently minded.

Bred For
Chien d’Artoiss were originally bred to hunt rabbits and hares and has been prized to be one of the best French scent hound breed to use for this type of game.

Environment
Chien d’Artois dogs can be kept as apartment pets. It is recommended that they live in homes that have a small yard.

Grooming
The Chien d’Artois breed is relatively low maintenance when it comes to grooming. Its coat is smooth and short and will be very easy and quick to maintain. This dog breed’s shedding pattern and volume vary every season.

Training
Artois scent hounds are like typical hounds with highly developed noses and will be a bit tough to train as they are known to lose focus once a scent is caught.

Health
Chien d’Artoiss are very rare but are considered to be healthy as there are no known medical problems that commonly occur to this particular breed.

Exercise
The Chien d’Artois dog breed is born to hunt and will require tremendous and extensive exercise to satisfy their activity needs. These dogs should be taken on walks every day and would be excellent jogging and hiking companions.
