The Czechoslovakian Wolfdogs are herding dogs bred to have the build, coat and physical appearance of a wolf! That’s right, you’ve read right! Also, these dogs are fast and packed with stamina and capable of running 62 miles or 100 kilometers with ease!

History

The Czechoslovakian Wolfdog is a breed that originates in the former Soviet region of Czechoslovakia. In the 1950s, the USSR’s Red Army had a canine breeding program that intended to produce elite dog breeds to be used for various tasks and purposes.

Further, in 1955, one such breeding was started in Czechoslovakia (now the Czech Republic and the Slovak Republic). In other words, it was a biological experiment that involved crossing the domestic German Shepherd Dog with the wild Carpathian Wolf. Because the Soviets wanted to know if it was biologically and genetically possible to produce elite dog breeds they’ve used a progeny of the cross between a male dog and a female wolf. And the experiment resulted in an overwhelming success!

In addition, after the successful experiment, the Soviets started a selective breeding program wanting to have a breed that has all the best qualities of the German Shepherd Dog and the Carpathian Wolf. So this was the moment of the Czechoslovakian Wolfdog birth.

Personality

So, as already said, the Czechoslovakian Wolfdog has all the best qualities of the German Shepherd Dog and the Carpathian Wolf. As a result, this breed will display liveliness and a docile disposition similar to the German shepherd. Also, it will display impressive endurance and very quick reaction and reflexes much like the Carpathian Wolf when out hunting.

In addition, Czechoslovakian Wolfdogs are known for their fearlessness, innate wariness and courageous traits towards intruders and strangers. But this dog will not attack without just cause. Therefore, it will be tremendously loving and extremely loyal to its master.

Czechoslovakian Wolfdogs originally bred to be the Soviet Union’s versatile working dogs.

Environment

The Czechoslovakian Wolfdogs will do okay as apartment pets if sufficiently exercised. However, the ideal living situation for this breed will be a big yard with enough space to run freely. In addition, these are dogs that prefer cold climates.

Grooming

Czechoslovakian Wolfdogs sheds hair heavily and does so every six months. Therefore, when the shedding season comes, they will have to be brushed every day! However, they are very clean and odorless dogs. So, baths don’t have to be that often.

Training

Czechoslovakian Wolfdogs can be well trained as long as they are motivated in the right way. Because of that, it is advisable to have a professional trainer handle this breed’s initial training sessions.

In addition, as for any dog breed, early age socialization and training will help them grow up to be healthy dogs.

Health

Czechoslovakian Wolfdog is generally very healthy. It is one of the healthiest dog breeds that is native to this region of Europe. However, they can suffer from hip dysplasia.

Exercise
