Dunker dogs are considered to be one of the rarest dogs in the world.

History

The origin of the Dunker breed is not quite specific. It has been considered as the same breed with two other dog breeds, the Hygenhund and the other Norwegian Hounds. Although also called as “the” Norwegian Hound, the Dunk is not really a local of Norway and believed to be imported recently. It only received distinction as a separate breed in 1934. Ironically, even in its adopted country, this dog breed is considered rare in Norway and the rest of the world. What is truly known is, Dunker dogs are bred for hunting rabbits.

Experts on the breed say a more precise history of the dog can be traced in nineteenth-century Norway, a time when it was known as the Norwegian Wilhelm Dunker. This name comes from its pioneer breeder named Wilhelm who crossed a selection of reliable scent hounds with the Russian Harlequin Hound. This produced a dog that can effectively trail a rabbit or hare using its nose, instead of its eyes which most hounds utilize when hunting this small game.

Personality

This is a good-tempered and gentle dog with a strong hunting instinct. They can be very vocal, as this dog breed has a high tendency to bark at almost everything.

Environment

Dunkers are not apartment type kine of dogs. They are more suitable to rural areas, with homes having a large-sized yard. Outdoor hunting trips is a must to have them mentally and physically sound and stable.

Grooming

No special attention to grooming is required, the Dunker’s short and straight coat is easy to groom and maintain.

Training

They are trained hunters and outdoor dogs, it will be a bit difficult to train them as indoor pets and housebreak would be a bit frustrating.

Health

Dunker dogs are among the healthiest dog breeds today, showing no major or minor health issues which affect most other scent hounds in their group.

Exercise

Having these dogs sufficiently exercised is a must! A large yard that is fenced would be ideal to have their daily energy levels stable.
