History
The Dutch Smoushond or also called the Hollandse Smoushond originated in The Netherlands, specifically in the areas within Holland. The precise date of their origin is quite unclear, but historical records proves that this breed existed earlier than the 18th century and gained popularity as a gentleman’s companion dog during the latter parts of the 1700’s.

Some dog historians and most breeders of the Dutch Smoushond believe that they may be related to the German Schnauzers, but this is purely speculations and no documented historical accounts give details of their actual foundation stock.

Like most European dog breeds, the Dutch Smoushond was nearly extinct after World War II. A revival started in the 1970’s that strictly followed a selective breeding program to re-create and re-populate their numbers using old photographs of the Smoushond pedigrees and from the recollection of the judges who remembered the standards.

Today they are safe from extinction and is considered to be a typical terrier-type breed The modern Smoushond is a tenacious and even called gluttonous ratters. Breeders prize them for their naturally instinct to be extremely delighted when going after rodents!

Personality
The Dutch Smoushond is considered to be a very easy-care house dog that will be obedient, friendly and charming as family pets and companion dogs. These are dogs that will be quite when around strangers. They are loving dogs when around friends. Skilled ratters, highly intelligent and very adaptive to any living situation, they are dogs that also shows alertness but with a great sense of humor.

Environment
Dutch Smoushond is a dog that will be okay to keep as apartment pets provided they are sufficiently exercised. They are dogs that should be kept as indoor pets. These small dogs will thrive in areas with cooler weather conditions.

Grooming
Hollandse Smoushond is a dog breed that is considered to be very easy to groom. They are dogs that should have an unkempt and very shaggy look. It is common to have their hair plucked every six months, depending on the quality of the dog’s coat.

Training
Dutch Smoushonds are dogs that will be enjoyable and very easy to train. This is because of their natural traits of being eager to please, very obedient and highly intelligent.

Health
Hollandse Smoushonds are very rare dogs outside Holland. Their low numbers results to lower medical issues recorded, making them a fairly healthy breed.

Exercise
Dutch Smoushond is a dog breed that is naturally tireless. They are dogs that should be taken out for long walks every day. It is also advisable to have these dogs take part in various athletic activities preferably in water.
