Introduction

The Estonian Hound is the only breed that was developed in the country of Estonia. Although it is not official, the Estonian Hound is the national dog breed of this country.

The Estonian Hound has great stamina and impeccable energy. Also, they are gifted with a beautiful voice. A joy to hunters’ ears! These dogs are very playful and full of energy. People always feel very happy around them.

History

By the 1920s, the bloodlines of the local hounds of this country were crossed with the Finnish Hounds. During the middle 1930s, the population of game-type animals in Estonia was in decline. This forced the national government to push a law that will help avoid hunting but not totally ban it. Further, the law was passed in 1934, forbidding hunting with dogs that are over 17 inches or 45 centimeters. As a result, this particular law forbids the breeding of the Estonian Hound as they meet this height requirement.

However, earlier in 1927, the standards of the Estonian Hound were approved by the Soviet’s national government. And, after the dissolution of the Soviet Union, the country of Estonia regained their independence. Therefore, the Estonian Kennel Union was established and approved a breed standard by 1998.

Personality

The Estonian Hound is so affectionate and is known to snuggle with their owners on the couch while watching the TV. This is a dog breed that will always be in a happy mood and display its pleasant disposition. In addition, they are dogs that are quite balanced, with the right amount of calmness and intelligence. They are generally never aggressive to family, children, strangers, other dog breeds and even cats.

Bred For

Estonian Hounds were developed to meet the height requirements of hunting dogs which is regulated by the Estonian government.

Environment

Estonian Hounds are best for rural or suburban homes that have an average yard. Therefore, an ideal living situation for them will be a house with a big yard where they can consume all that energy.

Grooming

Estonian Hounds have short and rough coats that will be easy to groom. This dog breed only needs to bathe if necessary. In other words, bathing them often can dry their skin and ruin their coat. In addition, they are dogs that shed hair in average amount and need brushing once or twice a week.

Training

The Estonian Hound breed is a very intelligent and highly trainable breed. Since they are natural hunters, they may sometimes get distracted but nothing that can’t be managed with good obedience training.

However, as for most dogs, early age socialization and training will make them mentally healthy and happy grown-up dogs. As a result, even as puppies they will get used to different kinds of dogs and will learn how to behave with children.

Health

The Estonian Hound is a dog breed that is generally healthy. However, this breed can suffer from anatomical problems affecting the eyelids and eyelashes. In addition, they are prone to Progressive Retinal Atrophy and allergies. Also, their owner should supervise every meal because they tend to overeat themself. As a result, they can be obese.

Exercise

Estonian Hounds are dogs that require a lot of exercises every day. In other words, it is advisable to have them on long walks the last about 1 to 2 hours. On the contrary, as with any dog, it can develop bad habits and show destructive behavior. In conclusion, this dog breed would be a perfect companion dog for people who like to run or hike. Also, since they manage so well with kids, they can be perfect as companion dogs.
