Introduction

For centuries, the homesteads and settlers on the Estrela Mountains of Portugal have been safe and well guarded by an ancient dog breed. They are the Estrela Mountain Dog, guardians of the Serra da Estrela.

History

The oldest dog breeds amongst breeds coming out of the Iberian Peninsula, Estrela Mountain Dogs are ancient livestock guardians and drafting dogs of Portugal’s Estrela Mountains. Speculations on their origin are subject of debate as to whether they are descendants of Roman mastiffs brought by Ancient Roman Legionnaires or the war dogs which the barbarian Visigoths brought with them. Regardless of their origin, these shepherds of the Serra da Estrela are proud workers who are fit and strong enough to work in a mountain environment.

Personality

The Estrela Mountain Dog is affectionate with family but wary with strangers. Although stubborn, it makes a gentle and devoted companion and has shown great traits which make them get along quite well with children of all ages, and most types of animals.

Bred For

Livestock herding, guarding and flocking on rugged mountain terrain and weather conditions.

Environment

Estrela Mountain Dogs are not recommended for apartment life. They need space and will do best with at least a large yard.

Grooming

Working dogs like the Estrela Mountain Dogs do not require a lot of grooming attention.

Training

Self-willed yet trainable, these dogs will is quick to train.

Health

Health mountain work makes these dogs hardy and sturdy, they have shown impressive resiliency to diseases plaguing other dogs of their size and group.

Exercise

This breed of dog is best suited to a family with lots of space surrounding the home where it can safely run free in an open area. They should be taken for a daily, long walk.
