Introduction

The Foxhound dog breed is available in two varieties:

The American and the English Foxhound. These are two separate and distinct breeds that belong to the Foxhound dog family. They are scent hounds specialized in hunting foxes!

The original and prototype of this breed are the English Foxhound breed which is stockier and slower when compared to the American variety.

The Foxhound dogs are good-natured dogs that will get along very well with kids, other dogs or pets. Also, they are very devoted to their family and can have a great need to protect their owners no matter what.

History

The breed that was developed in Great Britain is called the English Foxhound and was first created during the 1600s. By the late 17th century, these breeds reached American shores, where a bigger and faster variety was started being developed. It eventually separated from the English Foxhound and was officially recognized as a distinct breed under the name American Foxhound.

The English Foxhound was a stocky scent hound that would excel in trailing red foxes. However, its American Foxhound cousin was developed for the same reasons but created to be stockier and faster.

In general, both breeds are believed to be the result of crossing the Bloodhound with the Greyhounds or other scent hounds.

Personality

These dogs are energetic and enthusiastic dogs with a strong prey drive. It gets along with almost everyone, including children and other dogs.

However, as for any dog, early age socialization and training will help them become healthy and happy grown-up dogs.

Bred For

Both varieties were specifically bred to hunt red foxes.

Environment

The Foxhound dogs are not meant to be kept as indoor pets. They are naturally outdoor pack members. Therefore, an ideal living condition for them will be a big yard where they can run freely.

Grooming

This dog breed has a short coat that is very easy to maintain. They are average shedders that will need brushing once a week. As a result, the coat will stay shiny and healthy.

Training

Patience is the key when it comes to training the Foxhound breed.  These dogs are natural hunters and can be very easily distracted by some other small animal in the yard. However, when you have their attention, they will easily pick up anything you trying to teach them.

Health

Both varieties of this breed are relatively healthy dogs. However, some may be affected by hip dysplasia and some blood disorders. In addition, they are prone to ear infections.

Exercise

These dogs are very active and always full of energy. Therefore, every day walks and running sessions are required. In conclusion, if you are looking for a quiet and low-energy dog, then maybe this breed will not suit you. On the contrary, any family that is looking for a companion that will always be on its feet, then look no more!
