Introduction

Originally there were three known French Mastiff dog breeds. They are the Bordeaux Mastiff, the Parisian Mastiff and the Toulouse Mastiff. Today all these breeds are considered one and the same and officially known as the French Mastiff dog breed.

History

The French Mastiff is considered to be one of the most ancient dog breeds coming out of Europe. These dogs can trace their origins as far back as the times of Ancient Rome. Their ancestors were first brought France, which during Roman times is known as Gaul, by the Roman Legion. These were the warrior mastiffs that Romans used in battle. Formal breeding followed several centuries later and three places in France were known to breed the same type of mastiff at the same time. These are the cities of Paris, Bordeaux and Toulouse. Originally the French Mastiff had three distinctive breeds named after the French city of their origin. Today all three types are considered one and the same. They were developed for various purposes which include property and human protection as well as for blood sports. Today they are trained to be guard dogs and also as companion pets.

Personality

French Mastiffs are dogs that will display affection and friendliness towards the family. They are natural guard dogs and will display wariness towards strangers. These large dogs have a history of blood sports and are known to be aggressive to other canines. Proper socialization and training will prevent unwanted dog behavior.

Bred For

French Mastiff was bred and used as war dogs, flock guardian, a cattle herder, guard dog, trained to bait bulls, bears, and jaguars, and as a hunter of boars. Today they are guard dogs and companion pets.

Environment

French Mastiff dogs will be okay as apartment dogs provided they are sufficiently exercised.

Grooming

Mastiffs are types of dogs that require very little attention to grooming. French Mastiffs are dogs that shed hair in average amounts.

Training

French Mastiffs should be trained by experienced dog handlers as these large and powerful dogs can get dominant and maybe aggressive during training.

Health

French Mastiffs are generally healthy. They are known to be prone to hip dysplasia. Some lines of this mastiff dog breed occasionally have cases of epilepsy and heart problems.

Exercise

French Mastiff dog needs plenty of activities to satisfy their exercise needs. They are dogs that should be taken on long walks every day.
