The Frisian Water Dog is a loving, loyal and affectionate dog breed that was originally bred for hunting. However, today these dogs are perfect companion dogs that will always be near you and put a smile on your face!

History

The Frisian Water Dog breed originates in The Netherlands sometime during the 1800s. This spaniel-type dog was originally bred within the Friesland province of The Netherlands. This Dutch spaniel is rarely seen outside of the Friesland province.

In addition, this is a spaniel-type dog breed that was created to fierce killers of otters! The Dutch fishermen of Friesland were having a very difficult time during the 1800s as otters were competing against them in fishing. Therefore, fishermen decided to produce a dog that has one role –  to kill otters before they catch the fish.

Personality

The Frisian Water Dog is not a typical spaniel breed and is not recommended to be owned by first-time dog owners. Their specialized purpose makes them very fierce killers and will be a bit more aggressive compared to other European gun dogs. Versatility is one of this breed’s most admirable traits as they are an all-weather, all-purpose, all-terrain dogs. Also, this breed has turned into a popular companion pet as well as a hard-working farmhand! They are intelligent yet independent.

Bred For

The Frisian Water Dog was specifically created to hunt and kill the otters that were deemed competitors of their fishermen masters.

Environment

The Friesian Water Dog is not recommended for apartment life. They are rarely seen living in non-rural areas of The Netherlands. Therefore, an ideal living situation for this breed would be a big rural or suburban house with a big yard. However, their owner should have the yard well fenced because these dogs tend to run away.

In addition, these dogs will do well in cold climates.

Grooming

This Dutch Spaniel requires little grooming. Combing and brushing their coat occasionally is recommended. That is to say, brushing them once or twice a week will be enough to keep their coat healthy and shiny.

Training

The Frisian Water dog will learn quickly. These dogs are very intelligent and obedient. However, first-time owners are not advised to train them as these dogs are independently-minded and would refuse a weak handler’s command. The key when training these dogs is assertiveness and training methods done in a calm manner.

In addition, as for any dog breed, early age socialization and training will help them become happy and mentally healthy grown-up dogs.

Health

Frisian Water Dogs are generally healthy.

Exercise

The Frisian Water Dog will require plenty of exercise. Therefore, these dogs should go out for long and brisk walks every day. Also, they should have ample time to run across wide-open spaces. They should also be given ample time to play in the water and swim around!
