History
The cattlemen living within Germany’s Bavarian and Württemberg regions developed the Giant Schnauzer dog breed during the turn of the century. So they are relatively young as a breed. They were developed mainly because these German cattle owners wanted a larger version of the standard-sized Schnauzer. The breed is the end result of crossing several breeds including the Bouviers des Flandres, local rough-haired sheepdogs and Great Danes to the Standard Schnauzer. Before the two World Wars, the Giant Schnauzer dogs were uses as guardian dogs for stockyards, breweries, and factories. They saw police and military action during the two world wars. By the late 1940s, the breed saw a population decrease. Today they are being revitalized and their numbers are growing.

Personality
These large and powerful German giant dogs are known to be alert and protective. Giant Schnauzers are also one of the most even-tempered breeds. They show high intelligence and very brave when the situation needs it. Known to be gentle and very playful, this dog breed will react once provoked. It is advisable to have them supervised when around children and other animals.

Bred For
Locals to the Bavarian region of German used them to drive cattle. These large schnauzers are also used as guard dogs. They show excellent performance in law enforcement and serve the military as well.

Environment
The Giant Schnauzer is not suited for building living conditions. So apartment and condo units are a no-no for this dog breed. They are German dogs that will do best in homes equipped with a large yard.

Grooming
These large schnauzer dogs have a wiry coat. Unlike dogs with the same coats, theirs are reasonably easy to look after and maintain. They do not emit an odor that most domestic canine breeds have. Giant Schnauzers are dogs that shed little and some even do not shed at all.

Training
Giant Schnauzers are dogs that are easy to train, responding best to firm, calm consistency with a positive attitude, rewarding good behavior.

Health
Among all other breeds, the Giant Schnauzers are more prone to have cancer, with a tendency to develop toe cancers. Hip dysplasia is rampant; epilepsy is common and has high risks of getting obese.

Exercise
Giant Schnauzers have a huge need for exercise. These are dogs that need vigorous activities done twice every day. It is highly recommended to take them on daily, brisk, long walking, jogging or running sessions.
