History
Glen of Imaal Terrier has no recorded date of origin and most of their history is still unknown. But they are terriers who got their name from their home town. Originating from the remote valley of Glen of Imaal situated in the county of Wicklow. This is in Ireland’s western Wicklow Mountains region. This dog breed was bred by the natives for game hunting, showing impressive hunting talents when faced against vermins, badgers, and foxes. Historical records also show that these terriers were used as turnspit dogs, running on wheels to turn the meat. They are very popular in Ireland, celebrated in the country’s literature and arts.

Personality
The Glen of Imaal Terriers is short but powerful dogs showing strength and substance. They have this big, deep bark that belies its small size. These Irish favorites are spirited by nature and known to be hardy and stoic. At home, they are docile and show gentle disposition, at work these dogs are full of courage. These traits make them excellent companion pets as well as reliable working dogs. It’s good with cats and with children, although it may have some dog aggression.

Bred For
Hunting game animals including vermins, badgers, and foxes. Also used as a turnspit dog.

Environment
Glen of Imaal Terrier is a dog that is adaptable to life in an apartment. These Irish terrier dogs are known to shed hair moderately compared to other terrier groups.

Grooming
This particular Irish terrier breed has easy grooming requirements. They do need stripping which should be done two times every year.

Training
It is intelligent, highly trainable and generally less excitable than most terriers.

Health
The main health issues of the Glen of Imaal Terriers are the breed’s tendency to acquire flea allergies and Progressive Retinal Atrophy. They are somewhat more prone to hip dysplasia than other Irish dog breeds.

Exercise
The Glen of Imaal Terrier needs a daily walk. These dogs enjoy a good romp. Owners should make sure they play or have their outdoor exercise sessions in a large but fenced area.
