History

The Gonczy Polski is a scent hound breed that originates in Poland that is in existence from the 13th century. These dogs were specifically bred to adapt and work efficiently in Poland’s forest-covered regions. These scent hounds are very popular in Poland because of their ability to go against big forest animals.

By the 14th century, this scent hound breed gained the favored of Polish nobility and has been described in literature and paintings. During the 17th century, two main varieties of the Polish scent hound emerged, the Polish Brach which is the heavier variety, and the Polish Scent Hound, being the lighter variety. After the First World War, Gonczy Polski was still used in its native country as well as other Eastern European nations.
