History
The Gordon Setter can trace its origins in 17th century Britain. Similar dogs are believed to have been in the British Isles as long ago as the seventeenth century but their precise area of origin is in Scotland. The modern Gordon Setter as we know today was created and made popular by Duke Alexander IV, the Duke of Gordon, hence the name. The Duke started development during the 1820s and bred them as a bird dog. This was the only gun dog developed breed in Scotland. In 1842, the first batch of Gordon Setters reached American soil. It has been used and continues to be used for hunting but the majority of these dogs are now companion pets.

Personality
The Gordon Setter is passionate, clever, fun-loving, devoted and affectionate. It does well with children as long as they are suitably socialized and trained.

Bred For
Developed for guarding, watchdog, hunting, tracking, pointing and retrieving.

Environment
Apartment or condo living is not for the Gordon Setter dog breed. These are dogs that will do best when living in homes that have at large yards. The yards should be sufficiently and safely fenced to have a safe area for these dogs to move around.

Grooming
Gordon Setters are dogs that shed hair in the average amount. Maintaining their coat is not hard and only requires occasional grooming attention.

Training
Training these dogs is definitely not hard. The key to having them properly trained is to have a calm and firm training session with them.

Health
They have a tendency to bloat or obesity, eye problems, and the usual hip dysplasia is the most common health issues to watch out for this breed.

Exercise
All setters need a daily long, brisk walk or they will become restless and difficult to manage. Fenced yard with ample space should be sufficient to keep these setters happy.
