History
Grand Gascon-Saintongeois dogs are very rare and considered as one of the rarest dog breeds in the world today. They are one of two varieties of Gascon Saintongeois which was revived from near extinction by Count Joseph de Carayon-Latour. The other variety and much smaller version are called Petit. The two differ in hunting capabilities, size, and weight. The Grand varieties are pack hunters who were developed to hunt large game like deer and boars, but also capable enough to go for small game such as rabbits, hares, and foxes. They got the Grand tag in their name not because of their large size, although the Grand Gascon-Saintongeois is a large muscular hunting dog. They got the Grand for the type of game they hunt.

Personality
These pack hunters are serious and capable scent hounds. The Grand varieties are versatile and adaptable hunters, adapting to small or large game hunting when the situation needs it. They get along well with children and other dogs but are not really suitable as companion pets or be a family dog.

Bred For
Both varieties were bred to hunt in packs. Petit is a specialist in hunting hares. Grand is capable of hunting both small and large game.

Environment
These are not apartment type dogs and they do not do well in city environments. They will thrive in rural areas with lots of space to roam.

Grooming
Both varieties short coats require minimal care

Training
Fairly easy to train but will take time like all other scent hounds who are easily distracted by various scents around them.

Health
They are generally healthy for scent hounds, a dog group known to suffer various health issues. Grand Gascon-Saintongeois can live as long as 11 to 12 years without getting sick.

Exercise
These are pack hunters who are highly energetic. They need vigorous exercise sessions, regular socialization and daily activities such as group walking or hunting to thrive.
