History
Made famous by the animated character Scooby-Doo, the Great Dane is Germany’s national dog since 1876. Although recognized officially in 1887, this giant of a dog can trace its roots as far back as the ancient times. Greek coins dating back to 36 B.C. showed similar dogs like the Great Dane. They are called Apollo of all Dogs because of their massive size. From Egyptian monuments, Chinese literature to Gaul legends, mastiff dogs that resemble the modern-day Great Dane has been known throughout history. The modern-day Great Dane dog breed was developed as a board hound in the sixteenth century and is believed to be a cross of the Mastiff and the Irish Wolfhound. They were used primarily as hunters, but show excellent guard dogs for large estates. Today they are famous for their great tracking, watchdog and carting talents.

Personality

Training
The Great Dane dog breed is one of the giants of the domesticated canine family. They grow very fast and new owners are often overwhelmed by their fast growth. To have them on their best behavior, consistent training and rules are highly recommended to start right from the puppyhood stage.

Health
Great Danes are large dogs that are known to suffer just a few health problems. They including being high risk for obesity, hip dysplasia, osteosarcoma, and a disease called the wobbler syndrome.

Exercise
The Great Dane needs an ample amount of exercise sessions that should be done daily. Taking these large dogs on daily long walks is a must.
