History
The Greater Swiss Mountain Dog is believed to be the oldest of the Swiss dog breeds which were created by crossing the Roman mastiffs and local Swiss dogs during the Roman campaign in this region. They are believed to be the progenitors of the modern St. Bernard dogs. The Greater Swiss Mountain Dog breed was used as an all-purpose guard and draft dog by farmers and merchants but dwindled in numbers after the invention of the car. It served in the military during the Second World War. Post World War II era was a delicate time for these dogs which came very close to extinction. In 1968, the first batch of Greater Swiss Mountain Dog landed on American shores.

Personality
These Swiss guardian dogs are known to be faithful, devoted and stable in temperament. They will be territorial as it is in their nature, showing alertness and impressive watchful traits. But these dogs are never aggressive.

Multi-talented and all-purpose working dogs who excel in tracking, watchdog, guarding, caring and competitive obedience.

Environment
They will do okay in an apartment or condominium type of living conditions if adequately exercised. They prefer cool climates. A small yard is sufficient.

Grooming
The Greater Swiss Mountain Dog is an easy-groom dog breed. This breed is an average shedder.

Training
This giant breed takes time to hit maturity. They are late bloomers, slowly to mature in both mind and body. Training will be slow for these Swiss mountain dogs. Slow but possible.

Health
These dogs have the tendency to get overweight and may suffer from epilepsy, hip and elbow dysplasia and OCD.

Exercise
Moderate exercise is needed by the Great Swiss Mountain Dogs. Taking them on long daily walks is a minimal requirement for this large dog breed.
