Introduction

The Greek Sheepdog is locally known as the Hellenikos Poimenikos in the Greek language. They are often described as Greece’s Big Mountain Guardians for their size and ability to be commanding flock guardians in rough mountainous terrain.

History

The Hellenikos Poimenikos is an ancient flock guardian breed. They were first used and bred in Greece’s foothills region.

Dog experts believe that they were brought by Turkish shepherds that migrated to the foothills of Greece. They have much resemblance to the Turkish Akbash Dog breed. Centuries of breeding  Greek shepherd dogs with the Turkish brought shepherd dogs produced the modern-day Hellenikos Poimenikos.

Personality

The Greek Sheepdog is a tough, fierce, powerful and adaptable flock guardian that is naturally resilient. These sheepdogs are Greek’s Big Mountain Shepherds, famous for being decisive, very brave, very protective and very loyal to their flock and their shepherd masters.

The Greek Sheepdog is a proud and hard-working shepherd dog that will guard their flock with passion and will do it all cost. They are very dominating and impressively strong, making them unsuitable for the average dog owner.

Bred For

The Hellenikos Poimenikos is Greek’s Sheepdog breed used for centuries to herd and guard sheep in Greece’s foothill areas.

Environment

The Greek Sheepdog is not a city or an apartment pet. They are rural working dogs that should have a wide space to move about. Also, they can adapt to tough weather conditions, isolated areas, rugged terrain and places that have minimal resources. Because of that, they are perfect flock guardian dogs!

Grooming

The Greek Sheepdog is a natural working dog that lives outdoors and loves hard work. They do not require grooming attention at all. However, brushing and bathing them once in a while wouldn’t hurt them.

Training

As for any dog breed, early age socialization and training will help them become happy and mentally healthy grown-up dogs.

Health

The Hellenikos Poimenikos is considered to be generally healthy.

Exercise

Greek Sheepdogs needs a variety of activities not just to satisfy their exercise needs, but to keep him busy in general. In other words, boredom or lack of regular work will make them develop unwanted canine behavior that can lead to excessive barking and destructiveness.
