History
The Greenland Dog is believed to be one of the world’s oldest dog breeds still today. They are used by the indigenous people of Greenland as sled dogs as well as hunting companions on seal and polar bear hunting expeditions. They are members of the Spitz dog family and have been an Arctic working dog since ancient times. The Greenland Dog is also one of the rarest dogs in the world and litters are only available in their native country. In the past couple of decades, this Nordic breed has risen in popularity as hiking companions in countries such as Denmark and Norway.

Personality
Greenland Dogs are strong and compact Spitz that is energetic and powerful but are friendly to everyone. By everyone, this includes children, other dogs as well as strangers! Although friendly to humans and dogs, this ancient dog breed should not be trusted around small animals. They have a naturally high drive to hunt prey and will treat small animals as such. They have an independent spirit but will bond with at least one human family member. Like many sledding dogs, the Greenland Dog tends to roam, making them a bit difficult to train.

Bred For
Used by indigenous Greenland tribes for sledding and hunting work. They are also great watchdogs of people, property, and livestock.

Environment
The Greenland Dog is not good to be kept as condo pets. Apartment life does not suit this Greenland dogs. They need ample space to move about. Greenland dogs are great in cold climate conditions. In areas that experience hot weather conditions, these dogs will suffer.

Grooming
Minimal grooming attention is needed by these dogs. Brushing their coat occasionally will do.

Training
Training these dogs is very tricky to do. It will take the Greenland Dog quite some time to be well trained. Trainers or owners of these dogs should train them in a firm and patient manner.

Health
Like most ancient dog breeds and the ones included in the Nordic dog groups, Greenland Dogs are very healthy.

Exercise
The Greenland Dog is not a lazy breed. If not given a regular job and kept as home pets, they need ample amount of outdoor activities to remain well balanced. Taking them on long brisk walks every day is a must when kept as family pets.
