History
The Greyhound, the fastest dog in the world is an ancient dog that has existed in its present state for almost 2,000 years. This dog breed’s exact origins are unknown, but similar dogs can be traced back at least 5,000 years ago. The ancestor of the modern Greyhound was found in ancient Egypt and Greece. By the eleventh century, British commoners were forbidden from owning the breed, with a royal decree making it into law. 500 years later, during the reign of Queen Elizabeth I, this law was reversed. By the eighteenth century, the breed had regained its popularity. Thanks to the help of various coursing clubs that were established, In the United States, greyhound-type dogs arrived during the sixteenth century. They were brought by the Spanish explorers as hunting companions. Over time, the lean and fast dog developed into a coursing and racing dog. Commercial racing was introduced in the 1920s and gambling establishments have been using this particular breed for race track betting. Today, Greyhound dogs that are not members or registered on the AKC are most likely used in this controversial industry.

Personality
The Greyhound gets along with almost everyone. It has a strong prey drive and maybe untrustworthy with animals that are small and prey-like. It is affectionate, gentle, intelligent and playful. The Greyhound is a couch potato while at home. When out in the field, this dog is a natural-born runner. Because more Greyhounds available as pets are retired racers, many need patience and training to adapt to home life.

Bred For
Hunting and tracking hares and rabbits. They were also used to hunt stag, deer, fox and wild boars. Today they are used for their skills in hunting, sighting, watchdog, racing, agility and lure coursing.

Environment
The Greyhound makes do if kept in apartments. Owners just have to make sure that these dogs get sufficient exercise. Greyhounds will not do great in cold climates.

Grooming
The smooth, shorthaired coat is very low maintenance. Greyhound’s grooming requirement is easy and fast to do. Average shedding of their fur is to be expected.

Training
Training would be a bit difficult for dogs that were used for racing as they were crate trained from the track. Greyhounds are dogs that are very sensitive and emotional. Training should be done in a gentle, calm but firm manner to have a perfect greyhound pet.

Health
These are dogs that are prone to anesthesia sensitivity and allergy. They may look lean but these fast dogs have a high risk of being obese. Osteosarcoma is also common to Greyhounds.

Exercise
Greyhounds can be kept as home pets. They will be great family pets if these dogs are given ample time to do what they do most. That is to run in a big open ground.
