Introduction

The Hairless Khala may be considered as Latin America’s common dog breed. Not because they are common and huge in numbers, but because almost all of the Latin speaking countries starting from Mexico and nations throughout Central and Southern America, have varieties of the same hairless dog breed!

Hairless Khalas are available in types: The Hairless Khala Medio or short-legged and medium-sized Hairless Khalas commonly called as the Pottery Type, and the Hairless Khala Grande or long-legged tall types often called as the Sight Hound Type.

History

The Hairless Khala is a dog breed that is available in various sizes and called by numerous names all throughout the Latin speaking nations of North, Central and South America.

They got its name from the Native American Quechua tribe that lived in modern-day Bolivia. They call these dogs Khala, which means without clothing or naked. In the country of Peru, these hairless dogs are described as Caa Allepo, which translates to English as without vestment. Other countries and native Indian tribes have various names to call this Hairless dog breed, but this pertains to each dialect’s description of this breed, rather than a distinctive variety.

They are true blue Latin American dogs, bred and kept from the coastlines up to the highlands of the Andes. Today, a multinational initiative pushed by countries such as Peru, Bolivia and Argentina is currently on the works to track and record the Khala dog breed’s pedigree as well as establish a breeding program where various Khala dogs from different Latin American countries can be exchanges and bred with each other.

Personality

The Hairless Khalas are docile and very loving dogs towards their human family and friends. These dogs will be tolerant of other animals as long as they are members of their pack or family. These dogs will be aloof, standoffish and most often than not, unfriendly towards strangers, may it be human, other dogs or other animals.

Bred For

The Hairless Khala dog breed has been bred and kept all throughout the Latin American nations of the North, Central and South American Continent for various purposes but mainly as companion dogs and small hunting sighthounds.

Environment

The Hairless Khala is one of the most adaptable dog breeds known today for being able to live in boat coastal region and highland mountain ranges. They can live in cities, the suburbs and the country. They will be good apartment pets.

Grooming

The Hairless Khala is a hairless dog breed that has no coat. Grooming is not necessary although special attention to their bare skin should be given as it offers no protection from the elements.

Training

Training these dogs should be easy. It is advisable that family members do the training as they will be unfriendly towards strangers and people that are not members of their pack or household family.

Health

Hairless Khala dogs will be very susceptible to sunburn and sun-caused skin problems as they have no coat to cover their skin.

Exercise

Both types of Hairless Khala require regular exercise. The powerful but graceful Khala Medio requires to be taken on long walks or jogging every day. The agile and very mobile Khala Grande requires the same daily regimen but should also be given ample time to show off its agility by training them for agility trials.
