Introduction

The Kromfohrländer dog breed comes in two varieties: The Wirehaired Kromfohrländer and the Smooth-Haired Kromfohrländer.

The Wirehaired variety has a beard that is not present with the Smooth-Haired. This is the youngest among all dog breeds that are native to Germany.

History

The Kromfohrländer is a dog breed that originated in Germany and developed in the 1940s. This breed, which is fondly called as Kromi in its native country is the only dog breed in the world that descended from a mascot dog of the American army. American infantrymen adopted a dog they found wandering about in France. The soldiers tagged the dog along to Germany and got lost. It eventually found its way to Ilsa Schleifenbaum, the pioneer breeder of the Kromfohrländer breed. Schleifenbaum, named that dog Original Peter which is some kind of French pointing dog. She used Original Peter and developed a 10-year breeding program, crossing various terriers and griffon type dogs that are local to Germany. The Kromfohrländer was officially recognized by the Fédération Cynologique Internationale in 1955. In 2012, this breed was admitted to the American Kennel Club’s Foundation Stock Service.

Personality

The Kromfohrlander are dogs that will be lively and good-natured. They are intelligent. Although this breed was bred using various hunting breeds, they have very weak hunting instincts. These dogs will be initially resistant when meeting strangers for the first time, but once warmed up, they will be very friendly.

Environment

They are very adaptable and will do well in the city, suburban home and rural areas. They are companion dogs that are ideal apartment pets.

Grooming

They are easy to groom and requires little attention due to their coat that is naturally dirt resistant. All these dogs need are regular and quick combing and brushing.

Training

This type of dog is very enjoyable to train. They are dogs that will learn lessons easily. They are also known to be impressively quick when obeying commands and are dogs known to understand a great number of command words.

Health

These are dogs known to have epileptic seizures, cystinuria and patellar luxation. These dogs are also known to be prone to keratosis.

Exercise

They require a moderate amount of exercise and should be fine with brief walks every day.
